Have you ever thought that there just has to be SOMETHING MORE?

Have you ever felt like you have what you thought would make you happy, but there still seemed to be something missing? Most people probably feel this way more often than they would like to admit. Humanity has suffered from this restless void throughout the centuries. Even today, despite the material wealth and excess in entertainment, we live amongst an empty people—a people that are always seeking for something to satisfy themselves, but never finding lasting satisfaction. They often are easily impressed with the idea that getting one more thing will finally make them happy—whether this is a desired romance, a new gadget, or a captured childhood dream. In the end, they are left disenchanted and empty, with a deep sense of being alone—knowing something is tragically wrong, but not sure what to do. They are always chasing after something to satisfy, but are unable to fill the void they have deep inside.

There is a chilling darkness about this emptiness. Think for a moment about how many people have had it all, yet despair has overcome them. The rich, the famous, and the beautiful have many times plunged themselves to their death. Others, considered elite, have led such wretched, miserable lives that they are best seen as examples of a shipwreck, and not among those to be emulated in their pursuit of fulfillment. They leave an almost eerie warning: the void will not be filled with anything this world has to offer.

Emptiness is not the only plight of humanity. There is a more serious problem, and emptiness is only a symptom of this problem. It’s a problem that few people have ever cared to deal with seriously. You see, there is a deep evil that pervades humanity, and history stands as a witness against us. Throughout history people have hoped for a change, yearned for utopia, and tried to reach out and grasp something better than what they have had in the past. Yet empire after empire continues to crumble as corruption, greed, and the slaughter of the innocent persist and every other evil under the sun returns. We have something twisted about us. No matter how hard we try to deny it—it inevitably comes back to destroy us from the inside out.

There is a perversion in our nature. You can see glimpses of this in the smallest child. Lying and selfishness are not taught, but have to be disciplined out of a child. We are born with evil in our hearts. The daily news should be enough evidence to settle any objection. There is something drastically wrong with our race. And if we are honest, there is something drastically wrong within ourselves. Just think of the thoughts you have had and ask yourself, honestly, if you would like to share all of them at the dinner table with your friends and family? We are not only an empty people, but at the deep core of us we are also an evil people. And it’s not until this evil is dealt with that we will ever change from being anything but a broken and empty people.

Things were not always so. At one time, the human heart was completely free of evil. Then, there was a rebellion. Humanity sinned against their Creator and was justly cast into darkness as a consequence. We are now a cursed people, and left to ourselves, we are hopeless. We have offended God, and most of us continue offending Him until our last breath. We were made for the God Who made us, but we have forsaken Him, and now scramble to be satisfied with things or people that were never made to satisfy us, and never fully will.

Most people in the world believe in some sense of justice, and in this way we bear, however distorted, a mark of the image of God. But there is a deep sense in which God is not like us at all. God is perfect, and He cannot tolerate that which is twisted, that which is perverted, that which is us. God’s “eyes are too pure to approve evil” (Habakkuk 1:13a NASB). We learn from the Bible that God hates lying and lust and detests the one who takes pleasure in evil. You see, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We have sinned against an infinite God and deserve an infinite punishment. Since God is good and just, and any moral deviation must then be punished, we are found in a tragic state: Hell is our lot, and emptiness is our life. This is justice.

However, the end is still not sealed for you. There is good news! God came down and came after us. Though we deserved to be punished, He loved us so much that He sent His perfect Son to die for us. A penalty had to be paid. God could not just forgive our sin. If a Hitler escapes justice in our courts the world mourns. But many of us expect to be ushered into heaven without question, even though we have lived as an offence to God. Our sin must be paid for, and there is only one way out. There is only one way of escape for us, and that is through the cross. God so loved us that while we were yet sinners He sent His only Son to pay the penalty for our sins (Romans 5:8), to take our place, to take our sin, and to satisfy God’s justice. He bore God’s wrath against us on a wretched wooden cross, so we wouldn’t have to, so that we could go free and find true life in worshiping the One we were created to worship! Jesus Christ, God’s Son, died in your place and was raised from the dead three days later, defeating death!

The conviction that is found in every culture, that there is life beyond death, is a reality. Our souls will live on forever; however, if we are found with sin we have nothing to look forward to except an eternity in Hell. But Christ came to set you free! You cannot by your own effort escape from this poison of sin—this evil inside yourself. You are addicted to the deadliest poison on earth. You are in bondage far worse than any communist prison could create, and far more severe than any totalitarian dictator could impose. This will leave you separated from God for eternity. So, what must you do? You must turn from your sin and put your trust in Christ to deliver you, to save you from your sin and its penalty. Hell’s justice—an eternal death that does not die—will be appeased, and eternal life will be granted, if you would but repent and believe.

Many will use any excuse they can to avoid this message. Maybe you have been in religious circles all your life, but reading this makes you feel uneasy. You have never known Jesus Christ, but you keep assuring yourself that this can’t be. It is more than possible; it is actually often the case. Multitudes of professing Christians do not know Jesus Christ and have never had their sins forgiven. Many religious people are left in emptiness and sin under the mask of religion, because they have never truly repented, turned from their sin, and put their trust in Jesus Christ, and the penalty that He paid for them. They still delight in the evil that crucified their professed Savior and are living a sham.

Others try to keep as busy as possible, so that they do not hear the empty calling of their soul. It’s easy to keep busy and accomplish nothing. And if they continue on with this avoidance, their end will be tragic—a life misspent with all of their sins to pay for.

Don’t put it off. Countless multitudes of people have died unexpectedly, thinking that they had plenty of time left. I’m convinced that a countless sea of people, who once had intentions of making sure things were right with their Creator and Judge before they died, have awakened in Hell. We perish in an instant and the world goes on without us and we are soon forgotten. Death is a daily reality, and so is God’s judgment. You must not wait! You can only be too evil to receive Christ’s sacrifice for your sins if you’re too evil to admit your need and bow the knee to Christ. Sadly, many would rather go to Hell with their fists clenched to their sin, than to let go and admit they’ve been wrong.

I hope this is not the case for you. Please, don’t let it be. Don’t go to sleep tonight until you know you have made peace with God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Repent and believe! Repentance means to turn away from your sin and give God the rightful place as Lord of your life. Turn from your sins, and put your trust in the One who died to save you from them. Trust in the sacrifice of Christ. He took the punishment for your sins and then rose from the dead. Confess Christ as the Lord of your life and experience what it’s like to live. Get a Bible and start reading through the New Testament.

The truth will set you free. Judgment has to fall. God will give you a new heart and new desires, a joy the world cannot offer, but the choice is yours. Or you can hold on to your sin, pay for your own sins, and live an empty life, or trust Christ who paid the price to set you free.

You can search the world over, but true fulfillment, and an everlasting peace in an empty world, will only be found in Christ.
